Don’t Just “Pardon Your Pet” – Do Something Better! – Sedona AZ

Hi folks!  Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott AZ and today I wanted to share with you how mad it makes me knowing that unsuspecting consumers are doing harm to their area rugs without even realizing it!

Take a look at the label on this powder carpet deodorizer.  You’d probably think “WOW! THIS IS GREAT!”  Of course, why wouldn’t you?  The label boasts of being a “2 in 1 carpet and room deodorizer which actually helps tough odors, then leaves a light clean fragrance in your home.”  THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE!  The only thing that powders do is leave harmful residue in your area rug!

Here’s the truth of it:

  • This is a heavily scented powder and all you’re doing is masking urine odors with flowery scents.  The urine odors are still there, of course, they’re just covered up a bit.  This can cause your rug to smell like both urine and flowers combined, sort of like rotting flowers – yuck!
  • It’s a chemical left in the carpet (which is the only way for the flowery smell to continue).  This can be harmful to you, your family, and your pets if there are chemical sensitivities.  The label mentions that it’s made “with baking soda” but they don’t mention any other ingredients. Kind of suspicious, don’t you think?
  • It clogs your carpet foundation with powder and does NOT vacuum up as the directions suggest.  The directions warn you to NOT USE ON WET SPOTS as it clumps up.  Which apparently means you’re just supposed to leave the urine in your rug and not address it.  The directions also say “If product adheres to spot, rub with a stiff brush, then vacuum.”  But vacuuming doesn’t get all of this powder out and this powder works its way deep into the base of the rug.  Too many powder deodorizers and you’ll be left with a powdery mess at the foundation of your rug!

THE #1 REASON POWDERS ARE NOT GOOD FOR AREA RUGS?
It has accomplished absolutely nothing to remove the source of the odor!

Urine is harmful to rug fibers, ESPECIALLY DELICATE WOOL & SILK FIBERSWithout a professional cleaning, the urine salt crystals remain in the rug, which can eventually lead to dry rot (where foundation fibers split).

If you have urine deposits in your area rug, they need to be removed as quickly as possible by a professional rug washer.  Arizona Oriental here in Prescott AZ can assist you with this, along with other preservation services like repairs to fringes, side cords, etc.
