Cool Looking Designer Area Rugs and What You Must Consider Before Purchasing – Prescott Valley AZ

TIP: Before buying (especially at outrageous designer prices), know what you are getting into!  Some rugs are manufactured with the manufacturer knowing full well that the rug will only last a year or so – not decades.  That’s okay, so long as the consumer understands the limitations and knows what it is they are buying and getting themselves into. Ruthie here at Arizona Oriental and when I say “buy it today…live with it tomorrow,” I mean it as a warning to all the men and women that fall head-over-heels for the beautiful rugs they come across. 

RUGS LIKE:

MULTI-FIBER MISH-MASH –  Some of those synthetic fibers really don’t belong in the making of area rugs, simply because there is no proper way to clean these fibers.  For instance, long, delicate strands of ribbon woven side-by-side with wool. 

 

 

FELT SHAPES – We see some that are barely stitched down and held in place by tucking the felt strands under a large stitch that is so loose, these felt disks can easily be pulled to either side and out of the rug very easily. They won’t survive an active family!

CRAZY OVER THE TOP SHAGS - We have seen a few shag rugs with designer fibers that are so plush you could lose a small puppy in the rug. (Okay, maybe not – but these rugs hold EVERYTHING they can get their little fibers on – from hair pins to food to coins... you get the picture!)

JUTE, MERCERIZED COTTON AND OTHER LOW PERFORMING FIBERS - Rugs that are manufactured with fibers known for their low cleaning performance.

WHY DO RUG MANUFACTURERS USE THESE FIBERS? – Because they sell!  They’re beautiful and unique, however, as mentioned, many are very delicate and/or have low performance, meaning that before you know it they will look terrible and require cleaning.  And worse yet, since we’re talking low performance fibers, they will likely not respond well to cleaning efforts….something no one took into consideration when it came to manufacturing these specialty area rugs.  Once the rug is sold, the manufacturer’s job is done!

These specialty rugs unfortunately do not fit into any standard cleaning practices.  Often they will not withstand proper agitation needed to get a good cleaning or the fiber may not be strong enough for the proper cleaning solutions required to allow for soil release.  When cleaning, we must clean to the weakest link.  This means that if there is a delicate fiber mixed with sturdy fibers, we can only clean to the needs of the delicate fiber to ensure that no harm is done through our cleaning process.
