Can the Splotchy Areas on My Area Rug Be Fixed? - Prescott AZ
Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott AZ and I wanted to talk about one of the conditions we see in quite a few rugs that come into us – pooling. Pooling can be found in a lot of rugs that have thick pile (Chinese rugs especially) and happens in both woven and tufted area rugs.
Wait…WHAT THE HECK IS POOLING?!
Pooling is a type of pile reversal that is also known as watermarking because it often makes the area look like there was water spilled on the rug. As you can see in these photos, it does sort of look like part of the rug is wet. This isn’t the case, however, as it’s actually a redirection of the face fibers.
Normal area rug fiber stick straight up into the air. Eventually these fibers are worn down with heavy foot traffic, but sometimes these fibers will change direction. Instead of standing up straight, these fibers fold down on themselves and point to the side more. This causes the light to reflect differently off of these fibers, creating the mottled or splotchy appearance.
Pooling effects the fibers of the area rug itself, so it isn’t correctable by cleaning alone.
All area rugs are susceptible to pooling, too, even the most expensive and oldest area rugs. This condition has existed for centuries and no one’s really sure why it happens at all. Certain fibers aren’t more likely to have pooling as it occurs in wool, silk, and even synthetic area rugs.
Just because your rug is showing signs of pooling, of course, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have your rug cleaned! Area rugs should be cleaned every 1-3 years depending on how active your household is.
