Hello, I'm Ruthie and first I want to say thanks for watching my video! Many of my clients own beautiful area rugs. Some nice enough to hang on the wall. Whether it be a fine silk rug, Navajo rug or maybe even Grandma’s rug, if you have a desire to hang your rug, Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care can help. And with shipping options getting easier and easier you might be in Alaska or Florida and we can still help you here in Prescott Arizona.
The beauty of having us professionally add a hanging sleeve to your rug is that the stitches are not shown on the front of the rug. You won’t see an ugly line of stitches, even on the most delicate silk rugs. Additionally if you were to hang your rug incorrectly, such as with tabs or rings every few inches that can create damage as the weight of the rug is not evenly distributed. I’ve seen rugs with a sagging scallop look because of this. Also note, that if ever you change your mind and decide to use your rug on the floor, the sleeve can be easily removed with no damage to your rug.
There are steps to getting your rug ready to be hung on the wall. First the rug must be washed. Dust, soil, maybe even animal urine must be removed. Second your wool or silk fibers will also need to be treated with a moth treatment to help prevent any moth infestation. Moths really like to find wool and silk that is in an environment that is dark, quiet and undisturbed…… that exactly describes the back of a wall hanging. There is little sense in hanging a nice rug only to find that the moths have invaded and have done major damage to the back side of your rug later down the road. Clients have brought me rugs that have suffered tremendous damage on the back side all the while the client had no idea they had a moth infestation in their home; sometimes not until it was too late! An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Once washing and a moth treatment has been taken care of, your rug is ready for the addition of a sleeve. You should put a safety pin on the side you want your sleeve added and to indicate the top. Some rugs are used on both sides (flatweaves such as Navajo rugs) and often the pattern can be turned in either direction. I will want to make sure I get the sleeve sewn on so that it hangs exactly how you want it to. A simple safety pin will help.
Future care of your wall hanging is simply to periodically remove your rug from the wall and gently vacuum both the front and the back with an upholstery tool attachment to remove dust and while it is down from the wall go ahead and do a little inspection, front and back of the rug.
Hanging a rug! What a lovely way to display rugs….. And here you thought rugs were just for the floor.
