Most tufted rugs that we see here in our shop have wool face fibers and people tend to confuse tufted rugs with hand-woven rugs. Tufted rugs are different in their construction, however, because there are no knots holding the rug together. Instead, tufted rugs have a mesh foundation that the wool fibers are looped through. When the rug is complete, a layer of latex glue is placed on the back of the rug and a piece of canvas or monks cloth is glued to the back.
Due to this construction of the rug, the yarns can easily pull out of the rug. When it comes to vacuuming these kinds of rugs, I don’t recommend using an upright vacuum on them because they tend to have a more powerful suction. A safer choice is to use a canister vacuum that you can turn the rotary head feature off of so you’re using the suction only feature. You should vacuum your rug from side-to-side.
Tufted rugs naturally have a looser pile density than hand woven rugs. This makes it easier for soil to settle deep into the rug, so cleaning your rug more frequently may be necessary. By vacuuming frequently, you’ll stay on top of the dry particles on your rug before they can work their way down to the foundation of the rug. Good vacuuming practices is a major part of good rug maintenance in between regular deep cleanings with us at Arizona Oriental.
