Fringes on area rugs play a very important roll and are vital part of a rug’s construction. Some folks love them for the added touch they add to the rug’s splendor while other folks just don’t care for them as they tend to take the hardest hit and show heavy soil long before the rest of the rug looks soiled. Everyone knows how much Sedona, AZ folks love our four legged friends. Yes, we love our pets, but keep in mind that our pets LOVE rug fringes which are a natural attraction to puppies chewing on them and cat’s instinct to play with the fringes, batting them around, chewing on the fringes and getting them all tangled up.
In spite of the pets doing damage, here at Arizona Oriental and Specialty Rug Care we see more rugs come to us with damage due to (drum roll please) VACUUMS! Try to avoid vacuuming fringe all together. Remind your cleaning gal also. She may not be inclined to slow down her cleaning process, but when caring for rug and fringes it’s not a recommendation, it’s a must. Don’t allow her to vacuum near the fringes. If the damage has already been done I suggest you have it repaired promptly because the damage is likely to worsen when unsecured ends are let go. Arizona Oriental would be happy to inspect your rug and provide you with a firm estimate to repair fringes and any other needed repairs.
Don’t like the fringes when they’re all out of whack? Then you’ll love a rug groomer. A rug groomer is a rake with plastic teeth designed to be safe for the fringes. This will allow you to comb the fringe, lining the fringe up like little happy soldiers. It thrills me to see my rug’s fringe all standing straight and even! (Yep, I’m one of those people who like to see everything just right)
Regardless of your like or dislike of fringes, remember that fringes are warp threads. Warp threads are the rug’s foundation threads that run from the top all the way down to the bottom of rug. Once the rug weaving is complete, the weaver will determine how he/she wants to finish the ends; knotting the fringe in designs that may be simple to complex designs. These finished fringes are part of the fringe and therefore part of the structure of the rug.
This brings me to my next thought ….. NEVER CUT THE FRINGES OFF – Since the fringes are part of the structure, cutting them off will leave the ends of the rug unsecured and it’s a sure bet that unraveling is not far behind, just like the ends of a cloth with no finished edges will also unravel. Don’t succumb to the urge to take a scissor to the fringes. (I see that time and time again) If you really do not care for the fringe, we at Arizona Oriental and Specialty Rug Care offer our clients better, safer options than chopping them off yourself. The easiest option would be to professionally clean the rug AND FRINGES seeing if a thorough cleaning will bring the fringe back to an acceptable appearance.
For some, they just would like the fringe gone or have the small necessary repair done to prevent further unraveling. Whatever is your need, Arizona Oriental and Specialty Rug Care offers many options for repair at many price points. However it is only after inspecting the fringe that it can be determined which repair will be best for your rug and the proper recommendation(s) be made. Estimates are always free and usually there is more than one option available. If you would like the fringe removed, we offer fringe removal that includes securing the edge of the rug to ensure unraveling doesn’t happen. Fringe repair sometimes involves extensive repair work where rug weavers add warp threads to create a new fringe, matching the fiber, color and style to the existing fringe as close as possible.
