Hi folks! Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care here in Prescott, AZ!  I hope you all enjoyed your Independence Day! Today I wanted to take a moment to share this video of an area rug that went to our repair shop recently because the fringe was unravelling really badly.

This is one of the repairs that we can do for a hand knotted area rug where the fringe has been unravelling.  An area rug’s fringe is very delicate and a very vital part of a hand knotted rug. Fringe is made up of the weft fibers, which run lengthwise through the rug.  When the rug is finished, these fibers are tied and knotted to create the fringe! This also helps hold the rug together and prevent it from unravelling.

Vacuum cleaners are a fringe’s worst enemy!  They suck up the delicate fringe and often eat it up or lead to it unravelling.  Puppys have also been known to chew up fringes when we aren’t looking.

This type of repair is called a Zangeri repair.  We remove what’s left of the fringe as well as remove a few rows of the face fibers of the rug - usually about ½” to 1”.  Then we tie off the exposed weft fibers to create a new, short fringe that not only secures the rug but certainly looks much better than the unravelled, messy fringes that were there previously!
