It’s easy to think that because you have a wool rug that you have a really nice wool rug. After all, we’ve always been taught that wool is the superior rug fiber. However, do not make the mistake of thinking that all wool rugs are created equal as nothing could be farther from the truth. Just like people’s hair or dogs and cats hair differ from breed to breed, so does the sheep wool. As a rule you can expect the finer wools to be at a premium price.
Some of the characteristics that differs from wool to wool are qualities regarding strength, length of wool, softness all play a part in setting the value of the wool. Extremely high quality wool is reserved largely for clothing while coarser wool is the best choice for rugs because it is much sturdier and will hold up better to foot traffic, dogs laying on it and multiple cleanings over the course of many years. Another important factor is how the rug is made. Construction is a major consideration of a rugs value which I will discuss in a later article.
I can only suggest that before buying a new rug, do your homework and don’t expect the store salesman to have all the answers. Unfortunately, unless you are shopping in a high end rug gallery, the salesman will likely not have all the answers you are seeking. Think of it this way…. The more money the rug costs, the more research you should do to ensure you are receiving the value you are asked to pay for.
