Hi there, I’m Ruthie with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care and I see it is really getting close to our big annual holiday bash here in Prescott AZ, where hundreds of cowboys congregate at our fair grounds competing once again for the titles and purses! This brings to mind that we who are lucky enough to get in on the fun by enjoying the rodeo, parades and fireworks have our family and friends visit this time of year – many who are coming from out of town.
At Arizona Oriental it is not uncommon to receive the panic telephone call from rug owners explaining that their visitors brought their 4 legged family member too. Unfortunately 4 legged friends when taken out of their home environment, oftentimes get out of sorts or nervous and have accidents of urine, fecal or vomit.
My tip today is be mindful of your visiting animal friend’s needs. They will likely need to be walked a little bit more than when they are home due to the excitement of the new environment. Additionally animals have a natural instinct to mark their territory, so know that it is not uncommon for them to spray or tinkle in a new environment for these reasons. And what better place to spray or tinkle than the thick, soft surface of area rugs! Perhaps my biggest tip is to keep the visiting animals away from your lovely area rugs. An ounce of prevention can surely save you a pound of cure here.
If your rug does get christened with urine (or ??) carefully scrap up any solids if it’s the ??, taking care not to make the spot larger. Blot up as much liquid as you can. I suggest placing a stack of white paper towels or white rags over the wet spot and then standing on it. This will help transfer the liquid from the area rug into the towels. Continue with fresh, dry paper towels until you are unable to extract any more liquid from the rug. Same procedure applies for drink spills too. I am hesitant to suggest here any particular product be used to spot clean due to the instability of many dyes in the rugs. Even water can be detrimental and cause dyes to bleed when dyes have not been properly set.
If you are really nervous about the visiting animals, consider rolling up your little rugs and just tucking them away safely out of the pets reach. Should the unfortunate wee-wee happen call us for the professional cleaning your rug will now need.
My wish to you is that you have a festive, enjoyable 4th of July and be safe!
Till next time, enjoy your beautiful art for your floor and remember a clean rug is a rug that can last you a lifetime!
