4 Easy Steps for At-Home Urine Spotting on Area Rugs – Prescott Valley AZ

4 Easy Steps for At-Home Urine Spotting on Area Rugs – Prescott Valley AZ

Accidents are a part of life – most of us are pretty used to that by now.  For pet owners, though, nothing strikes panic into their hearts when pet accidents happen on their fine area rugs.  Taking your rug into Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott as soon as possible is the best plan.  However, there are some steps that will help to prevent permanent staining on you rug.  Acting quickly gives you the best chance of success in preventing permanent staining.

ALWAYS TEST EACH OF THESE PROCEDURES IN AN INCONSPICUOUS AREA FIRST.

STEP 1: Remove as much urine as possible prior to spotting.  White paper towels or cotton cloths can be laid on top of the urine spot, which you can then stand on to allow the urine to wick up out of your rug’s fibers and into the towels.  Repeat this step with fresh towels until you are no longer lifting up more urine.

STEP 2: Mix a teaspoon of colorless dish soap with a cup of tepid water.  Using your fingers, lightly distribute this solution to the rug fibers.  Begin at the outer edge of the stain and work your way toward the center. Follow this with blotting from fresh towels.  DON’T RUB!  Aggressive rubbing will distort rug fibers and can cause the stain to spread.

STEP 3: Mix ¼ cup of clean household ammonia to 1 cup of water.  Work gently toward the center and blot up with care.

STEP 4: Mix 1/3 cup of white vinegar with 2/3 cup of tepid water.  Again, use your fingers to apply this solution to the outside of the spot and work towards the center.  Blot when completed.

The key in this process is patience as you may need to repeat these steps several times before you see real results.

After removing all traces of pet urine, sprinkle tepid water over the spot and blot thoroughly.

At Arizona Oriental, we have a thorough urine removal treatment available for your area rugs.  Keep in mind that all rugs should be professionally cleaned after animal urine accidents due to the destructive nature of the urine salt crystals.
