3 Things to Look Out for When Buying a Used Area Rug – Sedona AZ

Hi folks!  Ruthie here with Arizona Oriental & Specialty Rug Care in Prescott AZ and I know that finding a used area rug that works great within our homes can be real treat.  Especially when that used rug is found at a yard sale for really cheap!  However, I would urge all of my clients to be wary when it comes to purchasing a used area rug because there are things we sometimes don’t notice until we get them home and they can become a real problem!

What should you look out for when buying a used area rug?

1. Odors.  Sometimes area rugs will come from homes where the previous owners were smokers and the rug now has cigarette odors, which require pretty extensive deodorizing procedures to correct.  Urine odors can also be an issue – requiring you to need to have the rug fully urine treated before putting it in your home.
2. Bugs.  If the rug was stored in the garage or under the bed unprotected, there’s a pretty good chance that the rug may have a moth infestation that needs to be treated before the rug can be cleaned.  Of course, a rug could be host to other creepy crawlies that you certainly don’t want brought into your home, too (bedbugs, carpet beetles, etc.)
3. Deteriorating latex on a tufted rug.  Most tufted rugs last about 10 years before the latex in them begins to break down.  This can lead to a powdering effect – where the latex is falling out of the rug and leaving imprints on your floor.  There may be a heavy latex / rubbery odor coming off of the rug as well that you don’t notice immediately.  Alternatively, the backing of the tufted rug may be falling off and need to be replaced, too!

Having the rug professionally cleaned before bringing it into your home is always a good idea!  Finding a beautiful rug for a great bargain is always a great feeling – but don’t let the cheap price on a lovely wool or silk area rug fool you into buying something that has more problems than what it’s worth to you!
